Nigeria President, Muhammadu Buhari has blamed State government for the threat of Almajiri System of Education in Nigeria. He also said that federal government should not be blamed for the almajiri education problem.
Buhari made this statement on Tuesday when the Progressives in Academics paid him a visit at state house, Abuja. He said ”Amajiri System of Education is a type of qur’anic learning system that evolves from economic demand and religious background from some northern states, News Agency of Nigeria reports”.
According to the statement made by Malam Garba Shehu, the senior special assistant to the president on media and publicity, he alleged that present government has objected the proscription of the almajiri system of education.
The president asserted that state governments has the responsibility to transform almajiri system of education in Nigeria. Beside, the the presidency has debunked the rumour that federal government has decided to ban almajiri system of education.
”It is absolutely wrong to blame federal government for the management and precarious condition of almajiri system of education”, Buhari said.
According to him, ‘’ I hope when you are facing the educational problem, you have to look into the constitution for any decision; knowing critically what are the role and responsibilities of federal and both state and local government respectively – every arms of government should know what is suppose to do”.
President Buhari highlights the relevance of education in the county – ‘’says education is among the top priority for his administration agenda’’. He further disclosed that the government has been supporting education by injecting about one trillion naira through Tertiary Education Trust Fund and Needs Assessment Interventions and Universal Basic Education Commission.
He said ‘’we remitted 25 billion naira for payment of allowances to lectures in Government Universities’’.
According to his statement, he said that that the government had helped JAMB and other institutions tremendously. He claimed the fact that government has invested immensely in home grown school feeding system programme as well as social investment initiatives which has unburden some parents ability to send their children to school. He anticicapated that government will continue for education transformation and support.
The president stressed on that his administration will continue focusing on education and could only be achieved if the society is secured and have educated citizens.
